Does UK Even Deserve A New Coach?

The concept of this post was taken from a comment made by JL Blue over on A Sea of Blue:

Kentucky fans deserve a coach like Calipari, for whom winning is everything. My own sense of schadenfreude has me wishing we get some guy who flames out, just so the LOD/Concerned fans for Prof. Cheeks' ego would never be able to utter another friggin peep.

Interesting take on the subject indeed, but one I actually tend to wholeheartedly agree with. My ultimate fear in the search for a new basketball coach is that regardless of who would come, in the view of the LOD'ers not a single person could live up to the ridiculous expectations that they would impose upon them. To further prove this point, let's anaylze the top picks for replacement of Tubby Smith: Billy Donovan, John Calipari, and Thad Matta.

By far the consensus replacement for Tubby Smith is none other than Florida's coach Billy Donovan. No one can argue Donovan is a fantastic coach, but would he stand up to the intense scrutiny UK fans would give him? Let's look at his numbers.

School Season Wins Losses Postseason
Marshall 1994-95 18 9 --
Marshall 1995-96 17 11 --
Florida 1996-97 13 17 --
Florida 1997-98 14 15 NIT First Round
Florida 1998-99 22 9 NCAA Sweet 16
Florida 1999-00 29 8 NCAA National Championship Game
Florida 2000-01 24 7 NCAA Second Round
Florida 2001-02 22 9 NCAA First Round
Florida 2002-03 25 8 NCAA Second Round
Florida 2003-04 20 11 NCAA First Round
Florida 2004-05 24 8 NCAA Second Round
Florida 2005-06 33 6 NCAA National Champions
Florida 2006-07 26 5 --
Career Totals 286 123

Aside from last year's Championship and the final game in 1999-2000, there certainly isn't much to brag about. What we see is a recurring theme of early flame outs in the tournament. According to my math, he also averages 9.8 losses per year, compared to 8.1 per year for Tubby Smith. If the fans at UK are bemoaning Tubby for high losses per season and the lack of final fours, Donovan certainly is not the man for the job.

What about John Calipari? We know he's an excellent recruiter, but I have problems overcoming the sketchiness of his persona. Well let's peruse his resume as well.

School Year Overall Record Conference Record Postseason
UMass 1988-89 10-18 5-13 None
UMass 1989-90 17-14 10-8 NIT
UMass 1990-91 20-13 10-8 NIT Final Four
UMass 1991-92 30-5 13-3 Sweet 16
UMass 1992-93 24-7 11-3 2nd round
UMass 1993-94 28-7 14-2 2nd round
UMass 1994-95 29-5 13-3 Elite 8
UMass 1995-96 35-2 15-1 Final Four
Memphis 2000-01 21-15 10-6 NIT Final Four
Memphis 2001-02 27-9 12-4 NIT Champion
Memphis 2002-03 23-7 13-3 NCAA
Memphis 2003-04 22-8 12-4 2nd round
Memphis 2004-05 22-16 9-7 NIT Final Four
Memphis 2005-06 33-4 13-1 Elite 8
College Overall 341-130 160-66 8 NCAAs, 5 NITs

Again, according to my math, that is approximately 9.7 losses per year, again, below Tubby Smith's numbers of 8.1. And what about his tournament resume? Well, aside from his successful campaign at UMASS in the late 80's early 90's, there is nothing to smile at. 3 NIT tournaments, and one elite eight. What? No Final Fours at Memphis? No championships? Puhlease. Next.

And lastly, that brings us to Thad Matta, the head coach of Ohio State. Certainly this man can recruit, since he has consistently brought in top talent, and what some have considered the greatest recruiting class ever. Let's look at his resume.

I don't have a neat table like the others, but nonetheless the statistics remain the same.

In two years as a Buckeye, Matta has more wins than any previous Ohio State head coach after two seasons on the job with a 46-18 record. Matta was 78-23 (.772) in three years at Xavier. He led the Musketeers to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2004, the best NCAA tournament run in program history. He coached one season at Butler, his alma mater, before taking the Xavier post. Butler was 24-8 under Matta's direction with an 11-3 MCC record and a league regular season championship, a MCC tournament championship and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Overall as a head coach, Matta is 148-49.

Matta is close to the average number of losses per year that Tubby has, yet is slightly higher at 8.2 per year. Again, however, no significant runs in the NCAA tourney, with the exception of the Elite Eight in 2004. Sure he hasn't gotten terrific talent, but why haven't they performed as well under him? Why does his system hold them back from truly performing at their peak?

In short, all three of the aforementioned coaches are terrific coaches in their own right, and have amassed great talent during their tenure. That said, their results would simply no hold up to the LOD'ers among us.

It doesn't matter what coach they want. None will do, and none can reach the expectations they have set forth.

That said, am I happy with the current season or last year's? Absolutely not, and changes should be made to correct the problem. Where I depart from the majority of Internet forum posters is that UK basketball is not going down in some firey demise. The "state of the program" isn't collapsing, nor are we doomed to be a second-rate team. All teams and all coaches have cyclic periods where they do not enjoy as much success as they have in the past. It happens. Changes will be made, as they should, and we can analyze their effectiveness after they have been implemented.

There is more to being a basketball coach than simply winning games. Unfortunately, the world is not so black and white as many would believe or desire. Simply put, one thing Tubby Smith excels at and these other coaches couldn't hold a candle to is the growth off the court. Basketball, while the cause of tears of joy and sadness, the creation of many cases of heartburn, is simply nothing more than a game. What Tubby Smith teaches these young men about life and the importance of education is something that few coaches can replicate. I only wish people would take the time to consider the bigger picture.

I showed one side of the argument

Now for the other. Taken from a very long post over at TCP:

I was able to the "Tubby Smith debate" on your show the other day and it was pretty good, it is a shame the arguments are so short but that is just part of it. Many people try and make this a race issue J.A. and that is just not it, it is a basketball issue. The University of Kentucky is the All-Time winningest program in the Nation with 7 National Championships 2nd only to UCLA back when Wooden could have recruited Jesus if he wanted to. So it is very understandable for a fanbase as passionate as UK to be up in arms about being unranked. That is unacceptable.

Tubby Smith was a GREAT coach at the University of Kentucky for the first 4-5 years and prior to moving to Tallahassee for college I was even lucky enough to meet him and sit with him for about 2 hours at a High school basketball game when his son younger son Brian Smith played for Lexington Catholic they were playing a school that my mother just happens to be the Principal of however the stats don't lie and since his honeymoon of that National Championship he has not done much for UK.

Here are some stats:

The media tries and play this like its a race issue (Wilbon) but the fact is he took over a program that was in Perfect shape after Pitino left (if you don't believe me watch this clip)

and let it turn into this:

--First UK coach to go 8 straight years without a final four.

--First UK coach to have to play on Thursday in an SEC tournament since the expansion to the current 12 team format.

--The First UK coach to lose 10 or more games three years in a row, and 4 of the last 7 years.

--The first UK coach to lose to Vandy in Rupp

--The first UK coach to be swept by Vandy in a season in 32 years

--The first UK coach to lose 4 straight to an SEC opponent in 30 years.

--Only coach to lose to Ole Miss at Rupp

--Only coach to lose to Vandy twice at Rupp

--Only coach to lose 4 home games to SEC Opponents

--More Home losses than any previous UK coach

--Most Double Digit loss seasons of any UK coach

--1st UK coach to not finish at least 2nd in the East since the SEC expansion

--Most transfers and problem players of any UK coach

--Never recruited a player to play in a final four in 16 years as a head coach

--Fewest NBA draft picks of any coach with at least 5 years (only 2 1st rounders in 10 years)

--47% of his recruits don't make their senior year

--Current 5 game losing streak to florida could soon be a new record

--Only coach with the overall #1 seed in the NCAA to lose in the 2nd round

--Lowest Average Points Scored Per Game since the 3 point shot was introduced

--Worst loss to Indiana ever (26 points)

--Only UK coach to lose consecutive games to Kansas

--Worst Loss on Senior Day since 1919

--Only UK coach with a losing record vs Michigan State (2-4)

--Only coach to ever lose to a number 1 ranked team at rupp.

--Only coach to ever begin the season ranked in the top 10 and finish the season unranked.

--Worst average attendance at Rupp Arena for one season, under Tubby (00-01 avg.21,014), since it opened in 1976.

--Rupp Arena hasn't averaged 23,000+ since the 98-99 season in other words attendance is down due to his slower style of play.

--Has only defeated one Top 20 team in the NCAA tourney since 1998 (#18 Utah in 2005). Also, has not defeated a single team seeded 1 - 4 in the NCAA tourney since 1998.

--Is this our first season with 0 wins against ranked opponents going into the tournaments in 33 years.

--From 1902-03 to 1997 Kentucky had only lost a total of 11 ten loss seasons, Since Tubby has been at UK he has already lost 5 more to that total in 10 years.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This shows how much Tubby has let the program fall over the last 2 years. These our are regular season stats:

Won/Loss record:
Probation - 36-20 (64.29%)
Past 2 yrs - 38-20 (65.52%)

SEC record:
Probation - 24-12 (66.67%)
Past 2 yrs - 17-13 (56.67%)

Wins against ranked opponents:
Probation - 5-6 (45.45%)
Past 2 yrs - 3-12 (20.00%)
--Outside of probation, this will mark the first time we have finished back to back seasons unranked since 1959-1961 (46 years).

--Already the most losses over a two year period (outside of probation era) in the history of our school.

*Tubby has beaten just one team seeded 5th or higher since his first season at Kentucky.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UK has 6 seasons of 9 or more losses in a 10 year period under Tubby.

That is 61 losses over the course of those 6 years.

His 4 years of other than the ones mentioned above he has only 19 losses.

I'll let you decided if 4 out of 10 seasons is acceptable at a top 3 program as UK clearly is.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7 out of 12 of Tubby's top 30-ranked recruits (Carruth, Parker, Stone, Allison, Crawford, Morris, and Azubuike) he has brought to Lexington have

A. Openly questioned the program.
B. Ignored Smith's advice to skip the draft even to the point of not being selected.
C. attempted to transfer.
OR.....
D. transferred outright.

* summer of 1998 Myron Anthony wrecked car and Wayne Turner lied about what happened.

* fall, 1998 - Jamaal Magloire involved with drugs.

* fall, 1998 - Ryan Hogan involved in underaged drinking.

* winter, 1998 - Myron Anthony transfers.

* spring, 1999 - Michael Bradley and Ryan Hogan transfer.

* winter, 1999 - Nate Knight transfers.

* spring, 2000 - Tubby, in his second year of recruiting, fails to add a top point guard and ends up taking New Mexico commit, Cliff Hawkins. Sawyer, Ridnour, Cook, Taylor, Barrett and Brown all say no to UK. Cook, Ridnour, Taylor all end up playing in the NBA while Brown and Taylor end up playing for Final Four teams. Hawkins, who verballed to New Mexico, would be one of many players who had committed to schools that Smith still went after: Crawford ( Michigan), Alleyne(Rutgers), Woo(Fordham), Tackett (Clemson).

* spring, 2000 - Desmond Allison arrested for substance abuse and illegal drugs. He decides to transfer to a D-2 school instead of continuing on at UK.

* spring, 2000 - UK's "silent verbal" from Darius Rice turns out to be nothing as Rice picks Miami. UK's other big targets pick Oregon (Ridnour) and South Carolina (Howell). First sign that little schools could beat blessed Smith in the recruiting wars.

* summer, 2000 - Jules Camara arrested for DUI and suspended for a year. Showing his intelligence, Camara tries to climb into the back seat of the vehicle (obviously the cop saw this feeble attempt)

* summer, 2000 - Michael Southall found with video camera as he makes a documentary on how he and his friends smoke hash.

* winter, 2001 - Marquis Estill suspended.

* spring, 2001 - Marvin Stone suspended for assaulting a girl with a phone.

* winter, 2002 - Rashaad Carruth suspended as he refuses to take shots in game because he was protesting a lack of playing time.

* winter, 2002 - Adam Chiles suspended.

* winter, 2002 - Marvin Stone transfers.

* spring, 2002 - Cory Sears and Gerald Fitch get into a fight when Fitch throws a water bottle at Sears.

* spring, 2002 - Erik Daniels and Gerald Fitch use fake I.D.s to try to get into a nightclud.

* spring, 2002 - Adam Chiles and Rashaad Carruth laugh at Tubby on national TV.

* summer, 2002 - Jason Parker transfers after supposedly being found with drugs.

* summer, 2002 - Rashaad Carruth tranfers.

* summer, 2002 - Adam Chiles transfers.

* summer, 2002 - Cory Sears transfers and says, "Kentucky's just not the same anymore."

* summer, 2003 - Marquis Estill ignores Tubby Smith's advice and enters the draft (he is not selected).

* summer, 2003 - Bernard Cote transfers.

* fall, 2003 - top PFs begin picking other schools over UK as UK has the PF spot wide open. PFs who end up not picking UK in this recruiting cycle are Hansbrough, Echefu, Leo "Cry me a river" Criswell, Barber, Brown, and many others. All of these players had UK on their top spot at one point or another but UK failed to bring all of them in.

* winter, 2005 - Joe Crawford tries to leave team but UK refuses to grant him his release.

* spring, 2005 - Kalenna Azubuike, after Smith says that he will not hire an agent, does exactly that four days later (he is not drafted).

* spring, 2005 - Randolph Morris refuses to call Smith as he enters the draft (he is not drafted). His parents cite the fact that Tubby did not develop their son properly.

* fall, 2005 - with the PF spot wide open for the second straight year of recruiting, Brandan Wright, Thadd Young, Deon Thompson, Kevin Durant and others all pick other schools with top PF talent already in place (with the exception of G-Tech and Young).

* winter, 2005 - Ramel Bradley seems hesitant to say whether he is content at UK.

* winter, 2005 - Rajon Rondo is rumored to be at odds with Smith and his team as he says, "There's some egos."

* Feb. 2006 - a player that nobody had in their Top 150 recruits (who was given a scholarship very early by Tubby) transfers from UK - Adam Williams.

* May 2006, JUCO transfer Simms leaves UK after one year.

* Summer 2006. Tyrone Nash. A player that was being recruited by the likes of Seton Hall before UK stepped in and offered a scholarship. Nash responds "thanks, but no thanks UK I think I'll go to prep school for a year and get a better offer after that". Obviously not his exact words but why else would he turn down a scholarship from UK to go to a prep school???

also, some of Smith's best players picked UK after their preferred schools screwed them. Prince loved UCLA but the Bruins screwed his older brother. Rondo loved Louisville but Sebastian Telfair was there. Hayes wanted Kansas and Roy Williams but Kansas put him on hold for Josh Childress.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kentucky is 1-7 vs. teams ranked in the AP top 10 when they played them over the last three years. The only win was over a #4 Louisville team in 2005 that eventually failed to make the NCAA tournament. In contrast Kentucky was 8-3 vs. top 10 teams during the first two years that Tubby was the coach in 1997-98 and 98-99. (0-2 in 2004-05, 1-2 in 2005-06, 0-3 in 2006-07).

Kentucky is 8-15 vs. top 25 AP ranked opponents over the past three seasons including 0-6 this season. (4-3 in 2004-05, 4-6 in 2005-06, 0-6 in 2006-07).

Kentucky is 1-6 vs. teams ranked in the AP top 20 in the NCAA tournament since the championship season of 1997-98. Again in contrast, Kentucky beat 4 top 20 teams to win the championship in 1998.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The losing 10 games now is acceptable because we play more games argument is bogus. UK isn't playing anymore games per season now than they did under Pitino. Pitino's first 2 teams were limited to 28 games because of the postseason ban. I will include stats for Pitino' teams both ways, but throwing out the probation years is a more accurate barometer of games played per season. I didn't include any of this years games for Tubby, that would skew his total.

Pitino total: 269 games, 33.63 games per season, 50 losses, 6.25 losses per season.

Pitino minus probation: 213 games, 35.5 games per season, 30 losses, 5 losses per season.

Tubby total through 2006: 312 games, 34.7 games per season, 71 losses, 7.9 losses per season.

As you can see, Pitino's non probation teams actually played MORE games per season.

This is ranked by win %. You will see how the number of losses appears to nearly be in perfect sync.

Some Food For Thought

Found this while surfing on the Internets. If nothing else, it provides an interesting analysis and take on the current situation:

We are 1-6 versus the top ten in RPI. Not a great record, but even a top ten team would have to fight to be 4-3 against the top ten.

After that, we are 3-3 against the next 50. (Going by Pomeroy's RPI)

Then we are 5-1 against the next 20, with the only loss being at Georgia, RPI of 64. We have no losses against teams that are lower in the RPI, and the next highest loss is at Bama, 44.

Of our eight wins over teams with RPI over 100, 4 of them are over teams from 102 (SC) to 109 (Charleston), with Miami(OH) at 117 and Eastern Kentucky at 130.

Arizona and KY are the only teams in the top 50 RPI (no, I didn't count after that) who have played 23 games against top 100 teams, and then 4 of KY's over 100 are in the next 9 teams.

That's probably why we are 12th and ahead of Arizona in the RPI. (And to save some of you the trouble, UCLA and North Carolina are close, playing 22 and 21, respectively, and no one else had even 20, based on my quick look. Creighton was closest with 19. I'm sure no one else is close to playing 7 games against RPI top ten teams.)

We've played only 8 games against teams over 100, and as I've already pointed out, 4 of them were against 101-109 teams, with Miami at 117 and Eastern at 130. We've only played 2 against teams over 200.

For comparison, Ohio St. has played 15 games against teams ranked over 100, Pitt 14, Florida 13, North Carolina 11 (including a loss), and Memphis 22; those are all top ten RPI teams. Florida and Georgetown have played 7 games aagainst teams over 200, Wisc, Kansas, Texas A&M and Memphis 6, and Maryland, Marquette and Indiana 5, all of those out of the top 25 in the RPI.

There's just no way to spin it; we have played the toughest schedule in the country, and only Arizona is close. We have played more good teams, and more great teams, than anyone, period. It's very disappointing that we didn't win more of those games against the top teams, but you can't spin our record into us losing a bunch of games against mediocre teams. We have an 8-4 record against teams ranked 11-65 in the RPI, after our disappointing 1-6 against the top ten. Again, the only team that could compare in terms of games played and won, against those teams that are pretty closely packed, is Arizona. (Mississippi St. West division champ, is #65, and UNLV is #11)

There is plenty to be disappointed with in this season, like getting swept by Vandy and Florida, especially when all we needed was to rebound a FT at Vandy, blowing a 17 point lead at UGA (my personal top disappointment) and not getting a road win at any of the last 4 losses. Our TO's have been too high, and our rebounding is occasionally pathetic.

But none of that is reason to disparage our record. We only have two "bad" losses, and they both came back to back about 2 months ago, home vs. Vandy and on the road to Georgia. We didn't get enough good wins to call it a good season, but we deserve to be in the tournament, without question, if our name was Mount St. Mary's because of the schedule we played and the wins we got against it. Our record versus teams 11-65 is proof, and it's only our poor record against top ten RPI teams that even puts the idea in anyone's head that we don't deserve to be there.

I'm not saying that I, or anyone else, should be happy with this season. I am saying that it is ridiculous to suggest we aren't NCAA at-large bid worthy. Our schedule just screams otherwise. We aren't top 5 seed worthy, but we deserve our bid.

Take it for what it's worth.

Sorry about the downtime

Been a hell of a week in lawschool.

Next week will be even worse. Got a weekend full of studying for a Civil Procedure midterm, plus working on an appellate brief.

Once things calm down, I'll post again.
